Cancun is one of the tourist destinations that the Mexican Caribbean offers; it is located in the north part of Quintana Roo state, which is southeast of Mexico.
This magical place is divided into two areas: One is the continental part, in which the city is located, and the other is an island 22 kilometers long, where the hotel zone is located.
The island of Cancun, which looks like the number seven, is limited at north by Bahia de Mujeres, at east by the Caribbean Sea, and west by Nichupte lagoon.
Three decades ago, Cancun was just a fishermen’s village with a population of no more than 100 people. Its people used to sow coconut trees, but with lots of work and little by little the town became one of the best, more exclusive and important tourist sites in Mexico.
This beautiful island is found on some maps as “Kankun”, which in Mayan language means “snake pit”, then changed its name to Cancun. From being an almost deserted and uncharted site, today it has renowned worldwide, so much that every year it welcomes more than 2 million visitors.
Since October 1972, with the construction of the current international airport and its opening a year later, as well as the first hotel, Playa Blanca (today Blue Bay), in September 1974 officially begins the tourist activity of this paradise.
